Waffle House, Shawnee, KS

My first visit to Waffle House in years happened to be during the lead-up to the World Cup Soccer competition, for which Kansas City was one of the sites. I think I had been to Waffle House sometime in my life, but it was not at a time I could remember. For all practical purposes this was my first visit here, and I was able to be pleasantly surprised along with the many World Cup visitors who said some of their favorite things about America were ranch dressing and Waffle House. I am with them on both of these counts, and my reaction to the waffles was probably like the ones the European visitors had when they were able to have the experience.

I think I got there just before the rush, meaning that most people do not come here at an hour they would call zero-dark-thirty (although the restaurant is open then). One of my favorite YouTube videos is of a concert that was performed in a Waffle House. I think this is perfect for showing the kind of vibe the restaurant has:

The restaurant serves a variety of items but it is best known for its all day breakfasts and signature waffles. Prices seem to be very good compared to what most places are charging. It serves cheeseburgers and patty melts, but there are not a lot of choices for anything other than traditional breakfast items.

I have had quite a bit of experience with waffles in various, and usually trying it one time will drive me to ordering pancakes or any other item on subsequent visits. Here, though, the Classic Waffle hit the spot and honestly was as good as the ones my mom made. The flavor and crispness were right on point. To attain this level the cooking oil had to be top quality as well.

My mom’s waffles were so good I ate them plain with no butter or syrup. I tried this waffle the same way and found that it also was enjoyable this way. However, when I tried it with whatever type of butter spread they had, this turned into a treat I think I had never experienced before with my mom’s waffles or with anyone else’s. Moreover I usually have to pour on some syrup to make a waffle enjoyable. Waffle house has syrup too. Yes the syrup was a nice treat but I was more than fine without it and more than satisfied with it.

The Bacon was not in the crispy state I would like it to be. Many on-line reviews indicate that they like the sausage.
