Jakarta’s

According to the United Nations the largest city in the world is now Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. I would think this would lead to more Indonesian restaurants in the United States, but so far the only one I have been able to visit is Jakarta’s (formerly Spicy One) in metro Kansas City. I was the only one dining in the restaurant at the time but I do not know what times are normally the busiest. I got good service when I was there.

The dining area

I ordered at the cash register so this is not a place where you sit down and the server takes your order. I did get to ask questions about the menu but the best help was just to ask the hostess for a recommendation. Her suggestion was a good one, along with the choice I had to make about a drink.

The Food

Rendang spicy beef curry

The Rendang Spicy Beef Curry was a good choice, with very tender and flavorful meat. The curry was only slightly spicy, and was one of the better ones I have tried. I felt that this was one of the more upscale meals I have had in the city and could easily become a popular dish at many mainstream restaurants. I thought the food here would be more Asian (Chinese, Thai, etc.) style but instead it was very much like Middle Eastern food. I did not get pita or similar side dishes but it was like eating roast beef with a flavorful sauce.

There are quite a few other choices here and I don’t know if any of them would be more Oriental style. Based on what I have tried I would say you will get very flavorful and high quality food.

Drinks

Young coconut ice

The Young Coconut Ice drink seemed to be a reminder that Indonesia is in the tropics where drinks can be as nutritious as they are good.

Other Notes
I do not know what other dishes are served here. I would describe my dish as upscale and spicy enough for a good flavor but not enough that it would scare most people away. It almost fits more in the category of mainstream restaurants than ethnic ones.

I am not sure if this is in the $$$ but it was more pricey than most of the places I have visited.
