If someone had the time to explore the restaurants in the Phoenix airport terminal this would be a very interesting quest. Many of them are part of local chains which offer a variety of cuisines. One interesting part of this is that they apparently have to agree to charge the same prices here that they do in their other restaurants. This is something that appeared to be lacking when I had a layover at the Las Vegas airport.
The actual situation for most people, though, is that they need to eat whatever is accessible to the gate for their flight. For me this turned out to be Humble Pie, a local chain of pizza restaurants that also has a large selection of sandwiches and other items. If you are flying Southwest this may be your best choice. My schedule did not allow looking at other choices, although I’m not sure I would have found anything that was significantly better.
The Food
My traveling companion got here and ordered before I did, and had opted for a sandwich. I got the impression that the sandwich was good, but he was having problems with the service and did not have time to wait around while we were waiting for boarding to begin at our gate across the hall.
I had time to order the Meatballs, which seemed simple and that would fit into my time frame. For me there was not really an issue with the service. The meatballs, though, did not have the flavor I was expecting from a locally owned Italian restaurant. I found, though, that they tasted more like food from an institutional fast food restaurant than a local eating place. The meat was good but it seemed to be covered with strong spices that did not make for a well flavored meatball. Disclaimer: I was having intestinal problems that made me more focused on both making it to the restroom and boarding the plane on time, but I was still looking for meatballs with a good flavor.
Other Comments
Compared to my previous stop at Las Vegas, this was a lot less expensive. However it tasted a lot more like typical airport food than my meal at Las Vegas.
