It is an unwritten rule in El Paso that coffee houses also serve as a place to use and recharge your laptop or iPad (for some reason these amenities seem to be far less common in Las Cruces). With El Paso’s heat the drink of preference does not seem like it would be coffee. This issue, though, is usually addressed by iced coffee.

Both coffee and tea houses have now caught on to the craze of serving iced matcha tea–a drink that is also good served hot and with about as many variations as are done with coffee. Little did I realize some of the reasons for its popularity which include the fact that they use the entire tea leaf (giving it a rich flavor and color), with the (probably true) claim that it provides a calm alertness.

Having already tried versions at other places, I ordered a Matcha Latte. The staff did a good job of taking me through the ordering process–letting me know what they had already found that I and others would like. “You want strawberry?” (Of course). “Almond milk?” (How did you know?). They provided me with all the information I needed to have a drink that lived up to the hype of a drink with floral note and a smooth energy lift (no, I didn’t write this stuff, it came from the Internet). People these days are not satisfied only with things that taste good–they want other benefits as well. I am glad that coffee houses now have something I really love to drink, or at least I can vouch for Global Coffee Roasters.
