Strawberry in a cup
Many times I wish for nostalgia not because I am too rigid to try new things, but because many experiences in my youth really did seem to be better than things that are available today. One of the best experiences for me was when the family got together with our relatives and one of the foods served was homemade ice cream. It seemed to be a lot of work but it put some kind of fixation in my head that if I find ice cream that is good enough I will be able to relive my childhood memories.
While no commercial operation can really replicate the home made version, Betty Rae’s wins over customers through its creamy flavor and small batches that try to make tasting various flavors a big part of the experience. I went in to the restaurant cold (probably a good thing for eating ice cream) but I had not read the various comments that suggested ordering the most exotic flavor possible because this is one thing for which Betty Rae’s has made a name for itself. My thinking, though, was that I wanted to try something served at almost every other shop so that I could compare them–thus the strawberry.
My verdict was that the “creaminess” that reviewers talk about is very evident and this is one of the factors in comparing anything to home made. The strawberry flavor was very good but I do think I probably missed an opportunity to pick out a flavor that I would not find at many other places.
