Bowie Bakery
Bowie Bakery is the city’s classic source for Pan Dulce done the traditional way with all the sweetness, calories, and flavor people want when they are going on a splurge, or for those times when we just want something really good. I used to go to meetings at city hall where the different departments took turns hosting, and doing so required providing goodies for everyone in attendance. The times that the “sweet bread” from Bowie Bakery was served made everyone think they were having a special treat.

Sweet bread and empanadas
The displays are full of baked goods of all shapes, colors, and sizes. I usually do not know what they are but I just point to the ones I want. It never feels as if I got the wrong thing because they are all good.
The Empanadas, though, are easy to spot or you can ask for them. Usually you will want to know which flavor of fruit is inside. The above plate has what looks like a pineapple empanada on the bottom with some of the fruit visible. Sometimes the fruit may be something like figs.
El Paso has recently had a number of restaurants open that serve the South American style of empanada with meat or vegetables. Traditionally, though, the local meaning of empanadas is that they are fruit filled.
