Quick question– what is the restaurant in El Paso that almost everyone can name even if they have never been here? Possibly a James Beard award winner? Many people know about Pancho’s Buffet but most do not know it originated in El Paso. Lucy’s Restaurant was on the Texas Bucket List TV show but I do not think that is the one that comes to the mind of most people. Perhaps some can envision being out in the West Texas town of El Paso with a little bit of thought about the cowboy and gunfighter days while pondering this question. In the meantime I will continue this review of a restaurant that seems to be rarely visited but maybe being featured on Steve’s Food Blog will help put it on the map.
This is of course Rosa’s Cantina, one of the city’s long standing restaurants where the bar seems to be equal in popularity but does not turn the business into an establishment that would be uncomfortable to take the kids. Its location on a former highway that was long ago bypassed by Interstate 10 seems to keep it largely off of local people’s radar. This may make it an attraction for visitors to the city, though, who envision a past time when the city was more exciting but despite the story in Marty Robbins’ song “El Paso,” was largely a sleepy town with not much happening.
The gift shop at Rosa’s Cantina is a happening place, though, with items that I think people will actually want, and are not just gimmicks.
The Food

Chips and salsa
The Chips were just right and were a good start to the meal. The Salsa was so spicy it was noticeable but after a couple of chips things were toned down enough that I had a very enjoyable appetizer with the chips and salsa.

Combination plate
If this plate looks especially good this is because it was. The Red Enchilada had the flavor and spiciness of true border food, and sealed the deal that I would want to come back. The waitress said they use Colby and Jack cheese, and all of it was well melted including the cheese in the middle.
The Chile Relleno was the most surprising item because it was so spicy I told the waitress I couldn’t eat it (not in a way to complain but to let her know I appreciated the real deal). As I got close to the stem though my words proved to be true and I couldn’t eat it. I would recommend this for anyone who liked the way the rellenos used to be at Chope’s in New Mexico– I think Rosa’s is now buying the rellenos that Chope’s used to use.
The Taco was picadillo style with potatoes and ground beef (and was good to kill the after burn of the chiles they use).
An Overview
This place could easily live off of its name but the food is solid and the staff made me feel like they were glad I was there. On my visit in January 2026 I told them this was my first time here in thirty years. Now I am wondering why I waited so long (it may have been just twenty but that was still far too long).
Disclaimer: The Chile Index in the information below does not apply to the chile relleno, although traditionally the heat level is different in every year’s crop
