Weck’s has been a New Mexico staple since 1991, and is best known for its breakfast. It is a local chain with most of its restaurants in Albuquerque but has locations in Santa Fe, Farmington, and Las Cruces. At first it appeared that it had a location in Louisiana, but that turned out to be the street where I lived when I made Albuquerque my home in 1981 (Louisiana Blvd.). The first restaurant opened out of state was actually in El Paso in 2024. As seems to always be the pattern when restaurants come into town, not enough El Pasoans came to the restaurant to keep it open.

I have been to quite a few breakfast restaurants in New Mexico that serve standard food, but it is enhanced by green chile salsa.  The same is true here except they give you three salsas–the green was so hot it overwhelmed the eggs rather than enhancing them, so I went with the red. They also have dishes such as huevos rancheros on the menu. My takeaway from this was that on the about 99.9% of the days I want something spicy I can get it here for breakfast or lunch.

Full belly egg plate

Full disclosure, the “Full Belly Egg Plate” was not my order but I tried everything on it. I ended up eating the Eggs because they messed up the order and brought fried eggs instead of scrambled. Although I was just here to taste things, the waiter told me I might as well eat the fried eggs because otherwise they would throw them away. Not only did I appreciate this but I found out the eggs were quite good, especially when I added the red salsa.

The Hash Browns were very good in the sense of not being bad (greasy, etc.). While appreciating this I really thought the hash browns were pretty standard.

The Ham also seemed pretty standard. I think I would have preferred the sausage.

Strawberry waffle

Strawberry waffle

The plate comes with toast or tortilla. Because of my dining companion’s sharp thinking, though he got a Strawberry Waffle instead (and I got a portion of it). This was not only the best part of the meal, but I am wondering if I will want the waffle again at Bite of Belgium. This waffle was more flavorful, richer, and the topping was less sweet than the aforementioned alternative (albeit probably still a good one). I am really liking breakfasts in Las Cruces (I also need to include the muffins at The Bean).

I should point out that the service was especially good in not making us wait long and in the way they handled an order that was wrong.
