One thing that abounds in Las Cruces which seems to do much less so in El Paso is coffee shops. Seattle probably has more per capita, but it seems that either the NMSU students or someone in the city has picked up this trend from somewhere in the region of dark skies and cold weather and figured that desert rats can enjoy this kind of thing as well.

My time in Seattle did not convince me to become a coffee drinker, and my try at it on a visit to New Orleans convinced me that I will never become one, but the various coffee places in the City of the Crosses have much more to offer. Some seem to be excellent sources of muffins. Milagro was of particular interest to me because of its breakfast burritos. This was the largest coffee shop I have seen in the city based on the number of tables inside and outside–I believe it is primarily because of the coffee. When coming into the NMSU campus area from Interstate 25 motorists are likely to first spot the ubiquitous Bucket of Stars that a thread on the old Chowhound web site voted as having the worst coffee in Seattle. Here, though, those who would proceed past Lorenzo’s Restaurant to the very next group of buildings will find a popular alternative. Some say the coffee here is better and it also seems to be less expensive.

The menu includes some pretty substantial meals including bagels, crepes, paninis, and sandwiches. I can tell by the number of items served that they must do a good business. When I inquired about the Breakfast Burrito I was told that they were sold out of the vegetarian ones, made with potatoes. All of them, though, contain eggs and green chile, so I consider any of them to be a good choice.

This burrito was not packed with meat as is common in El Paso. Instead it was a modest size at a modest price. The green chile was more of a flavor enhancer than something that would set your mouth on fire. The Salsa more than takes care of my need for spice. I thought this was a good way to start the day.

I liked the iced tea they had–either regular or Hibiscus (the one I ordered). One thing I discovered is that a person can think coffee would never even be a thought as a way to get the day going, yet it is worth a stop here. They do have milk shakes, smoothies, juices, and other drinks.

The staff seemed genuinely helpful, probably because they know the menu is a little intimidating for a coffee house. It seems that most customers like to stick around for a long time so when I went there were no tables available outside, and the inside was pretty full as well. It is always worth having issues like this if it is because of the quality of what is served.

  1. I’ve been to both locations of The Bean. They offer a Diablo Mocha (Rich espresso blended with house-made spicy vanilla syrup and decadent chocolate, creating a unique balance of heat and sweetness in every sip.). The spiciness comes from (I believe) Cayenne. I’d rather everything have red or green chile, but Cayenne does give the coffee a wake-up quality.
