Frisco Burger

Frisco Burger is one of those places I have heard about for a long time, but that once I tried it I thought “why hadn’t I done that before?” Not only did it supposedly serve some of the best hamburgers in El Paso (it does) but you could also get Chinese food (you can).

I was also told this place is so popular you need to go early to get a table. It turned out to be popular but it seemed that no one was having trouble getting a table. The menu offers more choices than average for hamburger restaurants (not counting the Chinese food) with items such as a Western Burger and a Hawaiian Burger. It has appetizers such as Jalapeño Poppers and a Garden Salad, and more main items including Fried Cod or Shrimp, a Round Hot Dog, and Chicken Sandwich.

Green Chile Cheeseburger

Right off the bat I think I hit the jackpot here with what I think is the best Green Chile Cheeseburger I have had in El Paso or Las Cruces. It is as simple as ordering a cheeseburger from the menu with all its toppings (mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickles and grilled onions) and adding “Long Green Chili” as an add-on. Even if the spelling is suspect this is the real deal green chile with all the flavor and heat that makes this such a sought-out item. I also think it helps that they go through the step of melting the cheese (something I think is not always done in El Paso). A big factor here is also the quality of the meat (which is lacking in about 80% of the places I go).

The Fries were a little lacking in flavor but they give you two options–you can add salt or use the bottle of green chile they have on the tables for what I think is the most satisfying option. Still, I think most times I would skip the fries and try to share some fried rice or an appetizer such as the poppers with any lunch companions who are similarly interested in trying options that most burger joints do not offer.

Sandwiches

The Round Hot Dog seems to be somewhat of a border specialty, with hot dogs cut up and served on a hamburger bun, topped by a mixture of chile and beans which is similar to Tex-Mex style “chili.”  I am not particularly blown away by this dish but it is flavorful and interesting.

Chinese Food

Another surprise here was not only that they served Chinese food, but that it was actually good. I think this has to do with the national origin of the owners and/or chef, as I think Frisco is probably a reference to the bay area. The Shrimp Fried Rice was quite flavorful, non-oily, and just plain good.

A Wrap-up
This is a great place for a green chile cheeseburger, or I think any style of burger.

The fried rice and various appetizers and side dishes offer an interesting variety of options, to the point that you can have a Chinese meal if you want (although I don’t think they have hot tea).
