Another Broken Egg Cafe

Another Broken Egg Cafe came on the scene with much anticipation and questions about how this obvious sounding breakfast restaurant would continue the tradition that people were expecting from the Village Inn which formerly inhabited this space. One question was raised from the fact that Village Inn is still here but located a couple of blocks up the street. Another question came from comments I heard from people who had been here along the line of “it’s good but expensive.” To be expensive means it has to be really good.

It may have started out being expensive but I think they were just early to charge the prices that now everyone else is doing. I still expect the “good” component, though.

For some reason parking is a big issue here.  There is a parking lot next door that looks like it belongs to the restaurant but it actually belongs to the children’s dentist next door who does not take kindly to people taking the spaces of his under age 16 patients who need to park their cars to get their teeth fixed.  Obviously this is a bad joke but the restaurant warns customers that he is not joking around.  Many customers though went to Village Inn for years and should be familiar with the fact that you need to use the restaurant’s parking lot on the south side of the building. People find this inconvenient because you have to walk up a slope to get to the building, but at least Village Inn now has a better parking lot for those to whom this is an important issue.

Breakfast

The Supreme Omelette

The Supreme Omelette

The Supreme Omelette with bacon and sausage in it has been one of the better items I have tried here. Although it seems a little plain because of not having peppers or chile, the eggs are good and it makes a satisfying breakfast.

Buttermilk pancakes

Buttermilk pancakes

The Buttermilk Pancakes are much better than typical ones I find in the big chain pancake restaurants although I think they are high priced.

Special coffee mug

Coffee served in a special mug is another one of the “perks” of coming here

Breakfast is the biggest draw here, with coffee being a main attraction. They make sure you always have enough.

Lunch

Club sandwich and gumbo

Club sandwich and gumbo

The Sonoma Club Sandwich was a good choice on the half and half lunch plate although the Gumbo was a good example of why most people who are not from Louisiana should not try making this dish. Having it spicy does not compensate for flavors that are not on point. The other side of the coin, though, is that they are at least trying to serve a variety of foods so that customers can have a more interesting lunch than at most other restaurants. I would say this is in contrast to the more traditional dishes served for breakfast.

Chicken salad sandwich

Chicken salad sandwich

The Chicken Salad Sandwich was more traditional than some lunch items but very well made so that I found it to be something well worth ordering.

Other Comments
This restaurant tries to bring more variety and better quality than other restaurants. The items I have liked best though were the standard dishes that are a higher quality than most such as the chicken salad sandwich and the buttermilk pancakes.

Out of the several breakfast restaurants in West El Paso I like Butter Smith best for traditional (diner type) food and Another Broken Egg Cafe for more upscale food (omelettes, etc.). Here, though, the Mexican restaurants usually have what I am craving and have good prices.
