Anson 11

Anson 11 is an upscale restaurant located in the heart of downtown that I think is mostly viewed as a place to go for special occasions. The upscale restaurants in El Paso are not in the price range that would be normal for most cities, so it is a “special occasion” that can be enjoyed more often than in a lot of places.

The restaurant has a few specials for lunch and happy hour. Dinner “upstairs” (on the second floor) starts at 5 pm. Sunday brunch seems to be the most popular of all their dining times. Most restaurants in town make an accommodation to people who want Mexican food. Anson 11 has a few Mexican items but they are largely appetizers or side items.

Brunch is the only meal for which the web site does not have a menu. It seems to revolve around seasonal items and the popular breakfast favorites.

Brunch

Eggs Benedict

My first visit was for brunch on Sunday, where I enjoyed one of the better versions of Eggs Benedict I have had, although it did not convince me that this is a dish I would like to have more regularly. The brunch menu has quite a few choices, which is one reason for its popularity.

My notes say that the Cochinita Pibil was good, but since I do not have a photo of it I assume somebody gave me a bite of their food.

Main Dishes

Filet mignon

Steak seems to be one of the big items here, although the choices are somewhat limited. They do seem to market the good cuts rather than large portions, such as with the Filet Mignon, where the French word for cute and small “mignon” seems very fitting. The meat is very good, though.

Wild mushroom stroganoff

I enjoyed the vegetarian Wild Mushroom Stroganoff, but it left me with the feeling that I might not bother to order it again. My advice for here is to get something you really like, pay the high price, have something you will remember (steak would be one of these items–hopefully the staff can give you a more complete list).

Desserts

Black forest trifle cake

So far the Black Forest Trifle Cake has been the most impressive item I have had here in terms of knowing everything is expensive but some things are a special experience that make it worthwhile to make the splurge.

Additional Comments
The high prices and upscale ambiance here give the feeling that some of the city’s best food is served here. I agree with this, at least on the desserts. For entrees perhaps I would say you can’t go wrong with the steaks and if you want to spend the money you will get a good meal.

A portion of the menu says “Bistro,” and I think this helps to explain the concept of Anson 11. If you want to have a casual meal you can do so, and if you want fine dining they have this covered as well. I am a little bit skeptical about the bistro side, but many of the items I have not tried look promising. Perhaps one of the strengths of the restaurant is the variety of items that are offered. I do not think I have seen the same number of choices at any other place that serves legit fine dining meals. The exact items offered will depend on the time that you go, so check out the on-line menus.
